Peace Corps first opened in Rwanda in 1974, closed in 1994, and reopened in 2008. Volunteers currently work in:
Health programs
TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) education
These initiatives align with the Government of Rwanda’s national priorities.
Position Summary
The Language & Cross-Culture Facilitator (LCF) is responsible for teaching Kinyarwanda language and cross-cultural skills to Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs).
The role operates under the supervision of the Training Manager (TM) and works closely with the Homestay, Language & Culture Coordinator (HLCC).
The facilitator:
Provides language instruction
Supports cultural integration
Assists trainees in adapting to Rwandan community life
The LCF also works with host families to ensure trainees practice language and cultural skills within the community.
⚠️ This is an intermittent position.
Key Responsibilities
Language Training
Participate in Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops.
Assist with lesson plan development and improvement.
Prepare learning materials, charts, and teaching aids.
Monitor trainee progress toward required language proficiency levels.
Provide feedback and progress assessments during training.
Support trainees with cultural adjustment challenges.
Integrate technical and cross-cultural vocabulary into lessons.
Incorporate medical terminology and information into Kinyarwanda teaching.
Encourage full Kinyarwanda immersion during Pre-Service Training.
Engage trainees in daily conversations in Kinyarwanda.
Provide additional tutoring sessions when needed.
Accompany trainees during community-based training activities or site visits.
Support development of new training materials and cultural learning resources.
Report attendance issues or disciplinary concerns to the HLCC.
Host Family Monitoring
Work with the training team to support cultural integration between trainees and host families.
Provide guidance to host families to support trainee learning and community integration.
Address homestay-related issues raised by trainees.
Discuss cultural, safety, and security concerns with host families when necessary.
Monitor trainees’ compliance with curfew and program rules.
Track and document trainees’ community integration and trainee-directed activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree (A0) in:
Education
or related field
📌 Must include proven adult teaching experience.
Work Experience
Minimum 5 years experience in adult language and cross-cultural instruction
Minimum 5 years working in multicultural environments
Minimum 5 years developing or adapting Kinyarwanda language training materials
Knowledge & Skills
Strong expertise in second-language teaching methods
Excellent command of Kinyarwanda grammar, syntax, idioms, and pronunciation
Experience creating instructional materials, including:
lesson plans
textbooks
workbooks
audio-visual aids
Strong training facilitation and adult learning skills
Ability to motivate learners and support rapid language acquisition
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
Language Requirements
Fluent in Kinyarwanda
Fluent in English (written and spoken)
Work Environment
Candidates must be willing to live at a remote training site for more than three months during the training program.
