Position Overview
Hengtian Attorneys is a law firm providing high-quality legal services to Chinese-invested companies operating in Rwanda. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Legal Intern & Lawyer to support our legal team in delivering professional, reliable, and compliant legal services.
This role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about legal practice and eager to gain hands-on experience in Rwandan corporate law, investment advisory, regulatory compliance, immigration matters, and litigation support.
Key Responsibilities
1. Investment & Corporate Advisory (FDI Support)
Assist in providing legal guidance on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) procedures in Rwanda, from company setup to full investment implementation.
Support senior counsel in advising clients on obtaining Investment Registration Certificates (IRC) and company registration through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
Prepare and submit documents for company incorporation, business restructuring, and social security registration (RSSB).
2. Regulatory Compliance & Government Liaison
Conduct legal research and assist in advisory services related to:
Law Governing Companies
Investment Promotion Law
Tax Law
Labor Law
Real Estate Law
Civil Code and relevant Ministerial Orders and Regulations
Liaise with government institutions such as RDB, Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), and other relevant authorities to follow up on client applications and resolve administrative matters.
Support statutory filings and ensure full compliance with current Rwandan laws and regulations.
Draft legal opinions on labor disputes, contract drafting and review, land law, and related matters.
3. Immigration & Expatriate Services
Assist with applications for Investment Visas, Work Permits, and Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs) through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE).
Advise foreign clients on legal requirements related to expatriate employment and residency under Rwandan law.
4. Legal Research, Drafting & Analysis
Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft legal memoranda, briefs, and opinions.
Draft and review commercial contracts and agreements under the supervision of senior lawyers.
Participate in client consultations and legal briefings on regulatory updates, new laws, or judicial decisions affecting business operations.
5. Litigation Support & Court Attendance
Assist in drafting court documents, including pleadings, summons, affidavits, and submissions for the Commercial Court, High Court, and Intermediate Courts.
Attend court hearings with senior advocates, take detailed notes, and assist in managing case files and evidence.
6. Administrative Support
Perform administrative and operational tasks as assigned by the supervisor in support of legal service delivery.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from a recognized university.
Professional Status: Licensed advocate is an advantage.
Technical Skills: Experience with IECMS (Integrated Electronic Case Management System) is a strong advantage.
Language Skills: Full professional proficiency in English and Kinyarwanda.
High ethical standards, integrity, and strong attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and handle multiple assignments effectively.
