Kivu Choice operates a fully vertically integrated aquaculture system, including:
Hatchery operations
Cage-based fish grow-out
Fish processing

Over the next five years, Kivu Choice aims to become Africa’s largest sustainable protein producer, targeting 30,000 tons of fish annually for the Rwandan market and export across the region.
Job Overview
The Hatchery Foreman supervises daily hatchery field operations including:
Broodstock spawning support
Egg collection and transfer
Pond environmental management
Hapa/net logistics
The role ensures:
Optimal environmental conditions
Proper egg handling
Availability of operational nets
Compliance with biosecurity and operational standards
This helps maximize hatchery productivity, survival rates, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
1. Egg Collection Operations
Ensure timely egg collection from brooders with minimal stress to fish and eggs.
Schedule egg collection ponds weekly.
Ensure eggs are transferred quickly to the incubation facility.
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene during egg collection.
Train the egg collection team and ensure protocol compliance.
Monitor broodstock numbers and densities.
2. Pond Nursery Feeding Management
Feed Preparation
Prepare correct feed type, size, and quantity for fry and fingerlings daily.
Measure feed accurately before feeding times.
Prepare reversal feed or medicated feed when required.
Feeding and Monitoring
Ensure fish are fed at scheduled times in all nursery ponds.
Observe feeding responses and adjust feed quantities.
Monitor fish behavior for signs of illness or abnormal activity.
Report unusual mortalities or feeding issues.
Record Keeping
Record feed quantities per hapa per pond according to protocol.
Team Training
Train team members on feeding practices, feed quality, and fish behavior.
Ensure feeding protocols are strictly followed.
3. Hapa Logistics Management
Hapa Washing & Maintenance
Remove dirty hapas from ponds and send them to the washing station.
Ensure hapas are washed, dried, counted, and recorded daily.
Inspect hapas for holes or weak seams and repair before reuse.
Logistics Support
Provide hapas to hatchery sections including:
Nursery
Broodstock holding
Fry collection
Storage & Inventory
Ensure hapas are stored safely and organized by size and purpose.
Maintain records of:
hapas in use
dirty hapas
washed hapas
damaged or repaired hapas
new stock
Ensure materials for hapa repair and production are always available.
Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants should have:
Diploma or Certificate in:
Aquaculture
Fisheries
Animal Production
Environmental Science
or related field
Minimum 2 years experience in fish hatchery or aquaculture operations
Practical experience in:
Fish breeding
Egg handling
Pond management
Hapa/net management
Ability to supervise field teams
Basic data recording and reporting skills
Inventory management skills
Physical fitness and willingness to work in outdoor farm environments
