About the Centre for Population Health (CPH)
The Centre for Population Health (CPH) at the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) is a hub for field research, education, training, and community service aimed at improving population health in Rwanda and beyond.
CPH’s flagship initiative, the Human Development and Demographic Surveillance System (HD2SS), was launched in rural Butaro in September 2025. HD2SS serves as a primary research platform for UGHE and external collaborators, generating longitudinal data on disease patterns, exposures, socio-demographic factors, and key human development indicators.
Position Overview
The Research Data Systems Intern will support the Human Development and Demographic Surveillance System (HD2SS) by assisting with data management, quality assurance, and reporting tasks. This internship is designed to both strengthen HD2SS operations and provide the intern with hands-on professional development in data science, public health research, database systems, and data quality assurance.
The role is ideal for a candidate with programming skills who is eager to gain practical experience in database development, data workflows, and research data systems. The intern will work closely with the Butaro-based data management and research teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Database Management & Programming
Support the development and maintenance of data extraction and transformation pipelines.
Assist with routine database operations, report generation, and development of code-based solutions to research needs.
Develop data quality reports and/or interactive dashboards to monitor data collection.
Prepare clean, well-documented datasets for reports, presentations, and publications.
2. Data Quality Assurance
Develop and routinely run data quality checks to identify inconsistencies and errors.
Participate in direct data quality assurance activities, including observing field interviews conducted in Kinyarwanda.
3. Reporting & Data Visualization
Generate data visualizations and summary tables to support research activities.
Prepare PowerPoint slides, reports, and poster presentations for internal and external use.
Qualifications
Required
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field with a strong quantitative and programming focus.
Programming: Some prior experience with programming (preferably Python, R, or SQL) and willingness to learn additional tools.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive
Basic understanding of quantitative research methods and data analysis
Professional Skills:
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Strong commitment to data quality, confidentiality, and ethical research practices
Nationality: Open to Rwandan citizens only
Preferred
Experience with health-related data collection, management, or analysis
Fluency in written and spoken Kinyarwanda
Experience with Git or other version control systems
Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics)
Willingness to reside at UGHE’s Butaro campus and travel to HD2SS field sites
