Position Summary

The Homestay, Language & Culture Coordinator (HLCC) will work within the Training Unit of Peace Corps Rwanda under the supervision of the Training Manager (TM).

The role is responsible for ensuring that Peace Corps trainees experience a safe, supportive, and culturally immersive environment during Pre-Service Training (PST).

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the homestay placement program

  • Coordinating language and cultural training

  • Supervising Language and Cultural Facilitators (LCFs)

The role ensures trainees receive high-quality language instruction and cross-cultural learning during training.


Key Responsibilities

Homestay Coordination

  • Identify and recruit host families before trainee arrival.

  • Collaborate with:

    • Training Manager

    • Assistant Training Manager / Logistics

    • Safety and Security Manager

  • Coordinate with local leaders and communities to prepare host families.

  • Supervise and finalize homestay arrangements.

  • Maintain positive relationships between:

    • trainees

    • host families

    • community members

  • Resolve conflicts between trainees and host families when necessary.

  • Provide cross-cultural and language support to host families.

  • Organize cultural events involving host families.

  • Document host family information in the Volunteer Information Database Application (VIDA).

  • Provide final evaluation reports of host families at the end of PST.


Language & Cultural Training

  • Organize Language and Cross-Cultural components of Training of Trainers (TOT).

  • Ensure trainees develop cross-cultural adaptation skills.

  • Design and implement evaluation methods for cultural training.

  • Integrate PACA concepts and Culture Matters topics into training sessions.

  • Facilitate discussions on cross-cultural learning strategies.

  • Coordinate and monitor language and cultural training sessions.

  • Maintain a Lesson Plan Book for language training materials.

  • Track and report trainee cross-cultural progress through weekly reports.

  • Integrate language and cross-cultural learning across all PST training activities.

  • Ensure trainees complete all planned learning activities.

  • Provide additional language support when needed.


Coordination of Language & Cultural Facilitators (LCFs)

  • Train and coordinate LCFs during Pre-Service Training.

  • Monitor facilitator performance and provide feedback.

  • Hold weekly meetings with facilitators to review trainee progress.

  • Guide facilitators in:

    • training methods

    • session planning

    • presentation skills

  • Observe training sessions and provide performance feedback.

  • Collaborate with the Training Manager on LCF performance evaluations.


Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in:

  • Education (preferred)

  • Social Sciences

  • Community Development

  • or related field


Experience

  • Minimum 4 years experience in:

    • teaching

    • program coordination

    • training

    • cultural exchange programs

    • or related fields


Required Skills

  • Strong organizational and planning skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

  • Experience in training design and facilitation

  • Ability to coordinate teams and manage multiple tasks

  • Strong understanding of cross-cultural communication

  • Deep knowledge of Rwandan culture and society

  • Computer skills:

    • Microsoft Word

    • Excel

    • Outlook

    • PowerPoint


Language Requirements

  • Fluent in Kinyarwanda

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
